Glucose Monitoring of Urine
in Rats and Mice

IACUC Standard Procedure
Effective Date: August 2024

Description of procedure:

The presence of glucose in the urine will be monitored by urine test strips.

Supplies:

  • Urine test strips
  • Color index for glucose concentration

Procedure Steps:

  1. Place a urine test strip on a clean surface.
  2. Restrain animal.
  3. If the animal does not urinate upon restraint, gently depress the caudal abdomen until the animal urinates. (Only one drop is needed on the test strip.)
  4. Collect urine directly or from a clean and dry surface and place urine on urine test strip.
  5. Evaluate the color change on the test strip to determine the concentration of glucose (refer to color index on test strip container, see Figure 1).
  6. Retest as needed per protocol.
Figure 1. Colorimetric change of the urine test strip indicates level of glucose in the urine.
