Glucose Monitoring of Urine
in Rats and Mice

Description of procedure:
The presence of glucose in the urine will be monitored by urine test strips.
Supplies:
- Urine test strips
- Color index for glucose concentration
Procedure Steps:
- Place a urine test strip on a clean surface.
- Restrain animal.
- If the animal does not urinate upon restraint, gently depress the caudal abdomen until the animal urinates. (Only one drop is needed on the test strip.)
- Collect urine directly or from a clean and dry surface and place urine on urine test strip.
- Evaluate the color change on the test strip to determine the concentration of glucose (refer to color index on test strip container, see Figure 1).
- Retest as needed per protocol.
